What Does a Conversion Rate Optimization Agency Actually Do?
The category is vague enough that two agencies using the same label can do completely different work. Here is what to expect, and what to ask.
The short answer
A CRO agency works on the gap between the traffic you already have and the action you want people to take. Not more visitors — more of the current visitors doing the thing.
That framing matters because it sets the constraint. If you have very little traffic, conversion work has little to act on and you probably need demand first. If you have meaningful traffic and few inquiries, conversion is exactly where the money is.
What the work involves
Research before changes
Analytics review, session behavior, form drop-off, and often direct input from customers or sales. An agency that proposes changes before looking at anything is selling opinions.
Message and offer work
Frequently the biggest lever and the least technical. Whether the page says the thing the visitor came for, fast enough, and whether the offer gives anyone a reason to act now.
Friction removal
Forms, steps, required fields, unclear next actions. Most conversion paths accumulate small taxes nobody ever removes.
Trust and proof placement
Evidence that arrives after the decision point does nothing. Placement matters as much as content.
Measurement
If you cannot tell which change produced which result, you are not optimizing, you are redecorating.
Testing, sometimes
A/B testing requires enough traffic to reach significance. Below that threshold, honest agencies rely on research and judgment rather than pretending a test on 200 visitors means something.
Questions worth asking before you hire one
- What will you look at before recommending anything?
- Do we have enough traffic for testing, honestly?
- What does the first deliverable look like, and when?
- How will we know whether this worked?
- What would make you tell us conversion is not our problem?
That last one is the useful question. An agency that cannot imagine a scenario where you do not need them is describing a sales process, not a diagnosis.
